Tara

It started just another day, the same as any other,
When this spaniel pup and I decide to own each other.
With eyes so full of love and trust, she took me to her heart,
A silent understanding, that I would play my part.
From a tiny pup, full of life and fun,
I watched her growing daily, her life had just begun.
So much to learn, so much to see,
And who would be the teacher? I thought it would be me.
But in this simple friendship it wasn't hard to see,
That Tara had her own ideas of how she would teach me.
I became aware of many things, and peace came to my mind,
I never saw her angry, troubled or unkind.
And when it came to that last day, she set my final test,
And taught me to accept with grace her need for final rest.
Where had our years together gone? I'd often stop to think,
Was it just a human con to form so close a link?
It really didn't seem that long, since I would call her name,
And she would come a running, to be at my side again.
With love as unreserved as this there's just one snag I see,
If only she'd been given time to live as long as me.

Friends

She came into my life, with eyes for me alone,
A friendly little pup that I was proud to own.
From the very start, we seemed to think as one,
She took me to her heart, our friendship had begun.
Would we take our walk today? Or was I feeling low?
I didn't have to tell her, she somehow seemed to know.
Then a time came in my life, when I was in despair,
I lost the one I loved  the most, my mother wasn't there.
I cried those bitter tears that would not cease to fall,
And through my grief and heartache, my friend shared it all.
At my side she'd sit, her head upon my knee,
Her eyes so full of love, friend you've still got me.
I will try to help you, although I cannot speak,
I will share your sorrow, for words you do not seek.
Many years have passed since then, and my pain has eased,
I look at my old faithful friend, she'd tried so hard to please.
We've gone through many things since then, as friends so often do,
So constant is her faith in me, that I have gained strength to.
Our time together is almost gone, for her short  life must  end,
Now it's my turn to be strong, for she is my best friend.

Silent Thoughts

With senses all intact, we never give much thought,
To the joy of hearing, a gift that can't be bought.
I'd never known a deaf friend, until a while ago,
When my old dog lost this gift, we sometimes still ignore.
To wake up to a strange world, where silence is no friend,
Hoping that it's all a dream, and it soon will end.
Not to hear a loving voice, to help her calm her fears,
Not  for her the sweet  relief of crying precious tears.
Don't  look on me as owner, regard me as a friend,
I'll be your willing donor, to you my ears I'll lend.
I can't bring back the sounds, that you have always known,
To compensate, we have found a language of our own.
To all my doggy friends out there, I send a little word,
If you have, someone to care, you'll know that you've been heard,
And I am really lucky, at least compared to some,
I've only lost  my hearing, could I cope with being dumb?

What's in a Name?

Let me take you on a walk, down to memory lane,
If only they could talk, would they choose these names?
Let's begin with Sherry, golden coat that shines,
Reminding me of autumn berry, or the glow of summer wine.
Next there was a Honey, red not gold was she,
A charmer bright and sunny, such a busy bee.
Pansy was so quiet and shy, her namesake we will keep,
Pansies never really die, they only fall asleep.
Gemma is a black and white, such a gentle miss,
Everything she does is right, a real beauty this.
Dana's only young, a super orange roan,
Her life is full of fun, just wait until she's grown.
My favourite I have left till last, Tara, truest friend,
To all my girls here and past, your name this tail will end.
